The Suitable Clipper For Your Dog
Every dog owner should be familiar with dog grooming clippers, especially for breeds like Collie, Cocker Spaniel, Bichon, Samoyed and many others. Every breed has a different coat and different needs, so it’s very important to know your dog’s needs beforehand.
There are dog grooming clippers or any other item in this category, brushes, combs, even shampoos, for every type of fur, short or long, thick or thin because even short fur can be difficult to take care of. The Bishon Frise for example is a short, curled hair dog with two layers of fur, a very fluffy undercoat and a longer, soft coat on the outside. It needs daily grooming and a bath every month to keep its coat in good condition, especially because it tends to tangle.
Even the very popular German Sheppard has a tricky coat as it is an all year shedder with a yearly heavy-shedding period. It’s true that dog grooming clippers are not the most important item for this dogs’ fur, a thick brush is as they need a daily quick brush to remove the dead, fallen hairs to keep the coat in good condition, bathing having to be done only a couple of times a year.
The Cocker Spaniel has a particularly interesting coat because it has short, medium and long hair on different parts of the body. The longest hairs are on the ears, belly and legs, being bred as a hunting dog and needing protection from thick vegetation in those areas. This breed needs frequent trimming and regular checking and cleaning of the eyes.
Now, to make a different product for every type of fur sounds pretty silly, so Andis, as other companies, chose to create pet grooming sets like Andis’ Deluxe Pet set, containing a dog grooming clipper with multiple blades and several accessories. The blades are different in both length and teeth spacing, which gives you the possibility to cut or trim any kind of fur.
The bigger the number of the blade, the shorter the fur will be after trimming and for a thick, double coated fur it’s the best idea to start with a more superficial cutting, using a 5 or 10 blade. This will get rid of the worst part, leaving a more even coat behind. An important accessory, especially for long hair dogs is the guide comb that should help you make straight, equal length cuts.
Between all the dog breeds, there are a few giants, more similar in size with a half-grown calf than a dog, the Mastiffs which includes several branches, the Saint Bernards, the Great Pyrenees and the Great Danes are the most well-known. These dogs can easily reach weights of over 100 pounds (45 kilos), being used by shepherds in the mountains so their coat must have been thick to keep them warm, a great characteristic to have if you live in the while, not so great when it’s time for grooming.
For supersized dogs, dog grooming clippers producers came up with a T shaped blade to help cover more area at once. The same concept was adopted for cattle and horses clippers.
